Defrosting… November 7, 2010

Since I arrived I haven’t had any time to sit down and write; in fact, when I had time I had no will to do so. That’s why the blog ended up being abandoned; at least now I have tons to write and say, and I’ll try to post more frequently – even if Chalmers is eating all my time. :)
It’s impossible to avoid the clichê: It’s been 3 months already, but it seems like I just arrived! Now things are falling into place, I’ve got a new routine, my room already feels like “my home”, I’m starting to get used to the differences…
Of course, in 3 months much has happened. I won’t even try to summarize, so I’ll just make a random list of whatever comes to my mind:
I missed some trams;
I’ve bought and assembled my own bike – I got lost with it too;
I’ve burnt my hand (and the food) on the stove;
Made many friends from every corner of the world;
I saw the sun through the window, thought it was warm outside and ended up freezing;
It rained a lot;
I drank a lot of (good) beer;
I turned into a coffee junkie;
I was introduced to the wienerbröd and to the kanelbulle;
I canooed on a beautiful lake;
I rode a rollercoaster for the 1st time ever;
I got embarassed by speaking broken swedish as well as english;
I attended Blind Guardian and Pain of Salvation concerts;
I showed up on the newspapers of a small town thanks to the course;
I went to IKEA and ate meatballs with mashed potatos and lingon jam;
I saw a plastic bag bigger than my room flying high inside my university building;
Saw the leaves getting yellow and making small piles during the start of Autumn;
I tried the “X-Mas soda“, a weird scandinavian tradition;
and a thousand other things that I can’t remember now…
To sum it up? I love Göteborg. :)
Going away August 10, 2010

Looking at the Windows calendar on the corner of my screen, I realize it’s August 10th, 1am. And even now, coming back from yet another goodbye party, I still haven’t realized that in a couple hours I’ll be travelling to a very far and very different corner of the world for a long time, distant from pretty much everyone I know.
Today the party felt different. I wasn’t melancholic or sad as I have been for the last days, I felt happy. Looking at all of those friends made me feel kinda confortable. People I see everyday, people I’m not so used to meet, people that I have met before but lost contact with – all there, gathered to give me a last hug and wish me good luck. Seeing each of them brought a flashback to my mind – how did I meet those guys, what has led them to sit at that table today with me? It was a weird, but good sensation.
I’ve hugged most of them for the last time in a long while, and I felt my heart shrinking. But I didn’t cry a single tear; I think the happiness was bigger. Maybe I’m just saving my tears for later today…
My luggage is still open, clothes and things scattered all over the house. My desk is getting empty (but still very messy). I bought condensed milk, brigadeiro, guaraná, cachaça and a brazilian flag to bring with me. But while everything is not ready and I’m not at the airport, it still doesn’t seem to be true.
Dunno if I should take the pictures from my wall to bring with me, or if I should leave them here, marking my territory. Undoing this wall would hurt tons, I don’t think I’d have courage – so many memories and small things and details…well, I have most of the pictures on my notebook, I can print them in Sweden.
This post is looking weird, isn’t it? So much stuff in my head, I don’t really know what to write or feel. Tomorrow my life will turn upside down, and I just don’t know what to think.
Gonna go to bed, to my last night in my blue bedroom, at home.
I guess this is my last post before travelling, around 18h to go. Good luck for me! :)
Tomorrow will take us away
Far from home
No one will ever know our names
But the bards’ songs will remain
Tomorrow will take it away
The fear of today
It will be gone…
(damn, I won’t be able to watch Brazil x USA because I’ll be flying!)

I can clearly remember February 15th, 2005. It was a tuesday, and my friend’s b-day. Before going to the uni I finally got to kiss the guy who was gonna be my boyfriend for the next 4-and-a-bit years for the 1st time. I drove my grey Corsa under a light rain to class, feeling very happy.
It was my fourth semester at the university, and I was a monitor of the Architectural Drafting subject. The teacher was Marcus Lima, an easygoing, really nice guy, loved by all the students. Previously he had been my teacher in two subjects, including Visual Communication. Working with design has always been my dream, so that subject was my favorite. And while on those classes, I discovered that Marcus had a design office.
In the same day, after my monitoring schedule, Marcus asked me if I was interested in having an internship at his office. I didn’t even think twice! From uni I went straight to my friends’ party, and told all the news of the day to everyone. Then I went home really early, as I’d have to work for the 1st time ever on the day next.
On this friday – July 16th, 2010 – I said goodbye to the office where I’ve been working for the last 5½ years. I was an intern, graduated (Marcus was my graduation project’s supervisor); then I continued working there, now as an architect ( and also as tech support from time to time, heh!). It’s difficult to believe that I’m going away after all this time…
Many ask me: “Wow, haven’t you ever wanted to try working somewhere else?” Sometimes I ask myself how it would have been if I had jumped out in some other time. I may have lost many opportunities, and maybe I haven’t learned stuff enough from other areas; but I really don’t regret it. I’ve never imagined myself working with interior architecture, or buildings. We had good and bad days, annoying clients, some interesting and not so interesting projects; but after all I’ve always been happy there, doing what I liked, with people that I adore.

To celebrate my leaving, they took me to my favourite restaurant: Mc Donalds. Marcus hates it with passion. It was awesome to see him eating a BigMac, heh.
When I started working there, it was just me, Marcus, and his wife Márcia, who’s also an architect. The office was in a house that we nicknamed “bat-cave”, because it was too dark. Things started getting bigger…more interns were needed; many appeared, left, and even came back again. The office moved to a better place, that now actually looks like an office (it’s also really orange-ish, everywhere. Pretty cute).
Day of the Architect, with the interns that stayed for longer: Gomes, Júlia, Carol Kataoka, Márcia and me. The blondie is Kriscia, a friend of mine that never worked in the office. :p
Random data: Marcus and Márcia had 2 kids in this period. Marcus had almost a hundred cellphones in this period too, because he’s always losing them everywhere; me and Márcia had around 4 each. Two coffee makers were damaged: one died after having being forgotten on power during a weekend, and the other was destroyed by my awesome physics skills (I poured cold water on the supa-hot glass and it burst). I gained some pounds, most of them because of the groceries sold in a store right downstairs, and the various restaurants we went to at lunch.
We decorated the office for the World Cup, Carnival, Chrismas and all the birthdays. We drank gallons of coffee, tea, cappucino and coke. We created many internal jokes. We listened to hours of crappy radio commentaries for my bosses’ team football games, and also tons of Maria Rita. We still feel a masochistic love for Corel Draw (say whatever you wish, love is blind and deaf!).
But if there’s something we did more than anything else, it was working. With Marcus and Márcia I learned how to be a professional, and I have pride of every small thing I helped creating over there. I still make tons of mistakes (too many for my tastes), but I was lucky to have such wonderful tutors who were patient, taught me, helped me fixing stuff and praised me when things turned out well. Cutting this umbilical cord and start walking by myself won’t be easy, but now I feel safe to try to do it.
But the most difficult part is to think that on monday I won’t see Marcus acting silly to make us laugh, or chat all day long with Márcia about random stuff, or playing practical jokes with the interns, or even complaining about the office’s temperature – so cold that it made me feel in Sweden already. Not many people were as lucky as I was, working in the area I loved, in a wonderful place, with bosses that were also very good friends.
Marcus said it was the end of a cycle; we didn’t even feel it, but everything changed a lot on the last 5 years. Goodbyes always hurt, and I couldn’t hold back tears when I returned my keys to them and went out; but what really matters is that our friendship didn’t end there and that all the good memories will last forever. Time to reset.

Today I went to the consulate to get my passport and visa. It was there since June 30th and had my phone and e-mail addresses attached to it, but of course no one could tell me it was already there. As the consulate site told me it could take 15 days to get it stamped, I decided to wait at least a week before trying my luck. They did it in 2 days. Wow.
From there I went to the Students’ Travel Bureau so I could get a discount ticket; but buying it directly from the TAP site proved to be easier and way cheaper. :/ I booked a Fortaleza – Copenhagen ticket, and from there I’ll go by train to Gothenburg. :)

Beware of my l33t Paint skills. And oh, pretend the arrow starts in Brazil. It's just a matter of looking to the bottom left corner of your monitor, around there or something.
So yeah, August 10th. See you guys there.
The (new) costs of studying in Sweden July 8, 2010

I chose to study in Sweden for many reasons, but one of the strongest ones was the fact that education is good and free – well, at least it used to be like this.
Some rumors were floating around, saying that Non-EU students would have to pay for tuition fees; last year, this resolution was approved by the swedish government. Starting 2011, residents from outside the European Union will have to pay an application fee, and if accepted, will also have to pay for their studies. For more info, check the Studera.nu FAQ.
It’s still not clear if the application fee will be reimbursable (it seems it won’t), but the price has already been set: 900sek (roughly 90 euros or 120 dollars). A Sveriges Radio article announced the prices for Uppsala University: the smallest fee is around 10.500 dollars, but may get to 23.500 dollars a year for the most expensive courses, without taking cost of living in account. Lund University has also announced its fees, all around the same ammount. I still haven’t seen anything about Chalmers or KTH‘s fees.
I’m really relieved for having applied last year; everyone that starts studying before july 2011 won’t need to pay tuition fees till the end of their courses. :)
The swedish fees are equivalent to the fees charged by other european universities; really high for free movers like me. For an american, this prices are ridiculously low when compared to USA’s universities; but for a brazilian or an african, the cost will most likely turn studying in Sweden impossible, even the application fee is really high.
It was also previously announced that the scholarship opportunities will increase, being backed up by the income generated by the fees. There aren’t any news about this yet, though.
It’s a big discussion – one of the main principles of a Master’s course in english is to turn studies global, with students bringing their own experiences from all over the world. Right now there are many african, asian and south american students in the swedish universities, but I believe this number will decrease abruptly in a nearby future. Even students from the US or other richer countries are speaking against this change – if they’re forced to pay, many would rather choose an renowned english, french or german university, where the idiom barrier is non-existant or easier to overcome (you may certainly have a friend that knows a bit of german or french, but finding someone with swedish skills outside sweden is way harder…).
Another point of debate is the quality of the universities – the bigger the prices, smaller the competition for a place, worse students being approved and so on. And finally…well, why are only the non-EU students being forced to pay, and not all the non-Swedish ones?
Some swedish citizens are against the new rules; after all, free education is one of the main pillares of the wellfare state. However, many dislike the fact that immigrants are flooding the country and studying in good universities that are mantained with their tax money. Truth is that the foreign immigrants also pay taxes, help the economy and inject foreign money in the country…
It seems the last european country that offers free education for non-EU students is Norway (but the cost of living there makes up for that).Finland also has some free courses, but they’re already testing changes to the system and some courses are already charging fees. I know Germany is also an option, but there are many restrictions; asides from those, almost all the popular student destinations are already charging fees.
For us, south americans, the best option to pursue studies abroad right now is to look for a local university that is an Erasmus Mundus partner, and keep searching for all the scholarships, exchange programs and opportunities that may appear. If your home university is not an EM partner (my case), everything gets way more difficult.
Let us wait for the new swedish scholarship programs; I hope it’s gonna be something fair, as they’re leading us to believe.

Well, as soon as I decided to move, I have also decided I’d write a blog. At the start, it was written in portuguese only; but now I realized that many of my friends are foreigners, and that almost all of my future friends won’t also be able to understand anything that I’m writing there. Also, many people have been contacting me on Facebook, asking for stuff concerning studying in Sweden, moving and all. So I hope I can help people now, by writing down my experiences in a language that almost everyone understands. So here it is, do forno ao freezer, english version – from oven to freezer!
In case you have just arrived here out of nowhere: I’m Daniela, a brazilian architect, and I’ll spend 2 years in Sweden starting August. I’ll take a master’s course in Design for Sustainable Development at the Chalmers university, in Gothenburg. My visa request has been granted, and I’m just waiting to get my passport back so I can finally buy my plane tickets. In one month, I’ll leave Fortaleza, land of the scorching sun (aka, “oven”) and move to a place with negative temperatures in winter for a change. ;)
While I’m waiting, I’m studying a bit of swedish, working at the office, watching the World Cup with passion, joking around with my friends from the Mangahelpers crew and trying to spend time with my loved ones. And of course, feeding this blog with my anxiousness. :)
I have translated almost all the posts from my original portuguese blog. I don’t think the content of both versions will be the same from now on, but I wanted this one to have something for a start.
Välkommen!

The last barrier is gone, my visa was granted. Starting August 1st, I can go to Sweden.
The news arrived by e-mail, as always. Application for the master’s? Online, I only needed to send hardcopies by snailmail. Admission notice? E-mail. Admission letter? A PDF file, that was recognized by the consulate as an official document without any trouble. Apartment hunt? E-mail. Of course I think all of that is pretty much awesome, but sometimes I miss having “real” papers in my hands…I must be addicted to bureocracy, maybe. This is gonna be solved soon though, as I’ve just sent my passport to the embassy so they can stamp it, and then I’ll finally have an official proof that yup, I’m going. :)
As soon as I get my passport back, I’ll buy my tickets; I’m planning to go by the start of august, so I can have some time to get to know the city, see Herman, request some documents and and join some long queues.
I feel butterflies in my belly…spent the entire day feeling nauseous. Took a look at the calendar, noticed that this month is about to end and from there on time will just fly. Finally I realized that well, I’m really moving out, that I will be completely alone for the first time ever…so much stuff in my head, I just understood the gravity of the situation.
Guess there’s no turning back now.
Been a long road to follow,
Been there and gone tomorrow
Without saying goodbye to yesterday.
Are the memories I hold still valid?
Or have the tears deluded them?
Maybe this time tomorrow,
The rain will cease to follow,
And the mist will fade into one more today.
Because the road keeps on telling me to go on…
Something is pulling me,
I feel the gravity of it all.
This song is stuck in my head.

Today the blog had a huge amount of views, people searching for information about princess Victoria’s wedding and finding my post! As I have also watched a bit of the ceremony, I’ll link some stuff that I’ve found, even if it’s a bit late:
The Local – News and pics; they were broadcasting it live, but the stream wasn’t working here. They had a Liveblog with tons of amusing, random information.
TV4 – They streamed everything. You can still watch bits of it there.In swedish.
Sveriges Radio – Pics, audio comments, and short news.
BBC – Well, no need to explain.

Dear Prince Daniel, now that you are a member of the royal family, and also pretty rich, please throw those glasses in the trash and get some contact lenses. Or at least some decent glasses. Seriously.
About the ceremony? That old stuff, band, nutcracker-like soldiers (one of them fainted, it’s almost a cliche now), waving flags, yadda yadda…LOVE IT! ;D
The news say that around 500.000 people went to watch the parade. It seems that not everyone was happy: as brokep (the piratebay guy) said on twitter, it’s annoying for some swedes to know they’re paying for a fancy party, and won’t even be invited for it (if only they knew Brazil…). The ceremony costed around 20 million crowns; the royal court defends itself by mentioning that the spent money would come back through tourism, merchandise and broadcasting rights. The Local’s liveblog mentioned that each $1 spent generated $100 profit.
Well, it seems there is an anti-royalty feeling among the swedes, but most of them don’t really care; I read somewhere that they seem to be just used to it, like you’re used to having a dear old sofa in your living room.
It was cool to watch it anyways; I was a bit curious about all of it, after having read news all around the internet. I was watching Australia x Ghana on TV, and taking a look here and there on the stream. The beautiful Stockholm scenary made it worth it, what a beautiful city!
(also, I got to understand 4 or 5 silly phrases in swedish, heh!)
PS: The royal families from pretty much everywhere were invited; some people were complaining because England only sent prince Edward to the ceremony, while William and Harry are in S.Africa for the World Cup. Who the hell marries during a World Cup anyways? ;D
PS2: I thought this was gonna be a short post. Sorry. :x
A place to stay (The world is so small) June 17, 2010

After tons of e-mails, many “no”s, many clicks and many queues, I’ve finally found a place to stay!
I’ve sent an e-mail for a Boplats ad, and finally someone answered in a positive manner. They wanted someone who would move in august, perfect!
It’s a room in a family house – a ocupational therapist, a cruise manager and their 9-years old girl. First I felt unsure – a sensation of being a stranger in someone else’s house – but they were so nice that I’ve decided to stay there.
I asked some people about this, and they told me that this kind of arrangement is usual and a very good option for people in my situation – I’ll have some help when trying to adjust to the new city, and also I won’t be totally alone. I hope they’re as cool in person as they were in the e-mails. :)
Finding an entire apartment for myself after being on the housing queue for a month only is impossible, and their house is in an awesome place, near Chalmers and some other places, really central. They’ve sent me pictures of my room, and it’s a nice place, not too big and not too small, just right. :)
Now a break for a small story.
As soon as I got my letter of admission, I’ve started searching for more people that studied or were going to study at Chalmers, and ended up by finding a really helpful guy on Orkut: Douglas. I’ve seen his post on a “Brazilians in Sweden” group, dated from 2 years ago, when he was in the exact same situation as I am, full of doubts; now he’s finishing his masters (by the way, he’s also an architect!).
I’ve sent him a message, and he did not only reply, but also introduced me to more contacts and gave me tons of tips! Then one day he told me that he lived in a family house, that it has been an awesome experience, but that unfortunately his room had been taken already. So I continued searching…
Ah, Douglas also has a blog, Norteando. There I’ve found a gallery with pics from his trip: Does it look familiar?
Douglas told me about his hosts; I asked my host if she knew them, and she told be they’re her friends!
The world is sooo small. :)

I just came back from the innauguration of my 1st solo project: A toy store, Kirus, the most colorful box in the neighborhood.
Seeing a project in which I worked come to life always causes a weird sensation, but this time I felt it harder than before. There’s always that small detail that makes you look and think “oh, that could have been better”, or that thing that didn’t end up looking like what you imagined, and stuff that looks better than you could wish for. Solutions that the client thought by himself, but that you never thought of when designing, and also that stuff that you planned, but wasn’t done for one reason or other.
Then you stop and look, and that thing that once was only a small pencil sketch is now there, being part of the landscape of the city. It’s so exciting! After hits and misses and obstacles, my “child” was born and the client loved it. It was a cool project to work on – who wouldn’t love to go crazy with colours and kiddie stuff? I’ve got many cheers, and it made me feel happy. :)
Going back home, I was thinking about how life changes its course. Since I’ve started working on this, I’ve been introduced to many people, all potential clients. For a second, it seemed my career was gonna take off, and I’d be able to start walking on my own shoes soon.
Then boom, I get a letter of admission and suddenly I’m moving to the other side of the world. Am I crazy? How is it gonna be there? When I come back, how is it gonna be? Wait, what if an opportunity appears and I don’t come back? Was this my first and last project here? Will I have space there? I have no idea!
I’m kinda scared. In fact, I’m totally scared.
