The gravity of it all June 23, 2010

The last barrier is gone, my visa was granted. Starting August 1st, I can go to Sweden.

The news arrived by e-mail, as always. Application for the master’s? Online, I only needed to send hardcopies by snailmail. Admission notice? E-mail. Admission letter? A PDF file, that was recognized by the consulate as an official document without any trouble. Apartment hunt? E-mail.  Of course I think all of that is pretty much awesome, but sometimes I miss having “real” papers in my hands…I must be addicted to bureocracy, maybe. This is gonna be solved soon though, as I’ve just sent my passport to the embassy so they can stamp it, and then I’ll finally have an official proof that yup, I’m going. :)

As soon as I get my passport back, I’ll buy my tickets; I’m planning to go by the start of august, so I can have some time to get to know the city, see Herman, request some documents and and join some long queues.

I feel butterflies in my belly…spent the entire day feeling nauseous. Took a look at the calendar, noticed that this month is about to end and from there on time will just fly. Finally I realized that well, I’m really moving out, that I will be completely alone for the first time ever…so much stuff in my head, I just understood the gravity of the situation.

Guess there’s no turning back now.

Been a long road to follow,

Been there and gone tomorrow

Without saying goodbye to yesterday.

Are the memories I hold still valid?

Or have the tears deluded them?

Maybe this time tomorrow,

The rain will cease to follow,

And the mist will fade into one more today.

Because the road keeps on telling me to go on…

Something is pulling me,

I feel the gravity of it all.

This song is stuck in my head.

Today the blog had a huge amount of views, people searching for information about princess Victoria’s wedding and finding my post! As I have also watched a bit of the ceremony, I’ll link some stuff that I’ve found, even if it’s a bit late:

The Local – News and pics; they were broadcasting it live, but the stream wasn’t working here. They had a Liveblog with tons of amusing, random information.

TV4 – They streamed everything. You can still watch bits of it there. In swedish.

Sveriges Radio – Pics, audio comments, and short news.

BBC – Well, no need to explain.

Dear Prince Daniel, now that you are a member of the royal family, and also pretty rich, please throw those glasses in the trash and get some contact lenses. Or at least some decent glasses. Seriously.

About the ceremony? That old stuff, band, nutcracker-like soldiers (one of them fainted, it’s almost a cliche now), waving flags, yadda yadda…LOVE IT! ;D

The news say that around 500.000 people went to watch the parade. It seems that not everyone was happy: as brokep (the piratebay guy) said on twitter, it’s annoying for some swedes to know they’re paying for a fancy party, and won’t even be invited for it (if only they knew Brazil…). The ceremony costed around 20 million crowns; the royal court defends itself by mentioning that the spent money would come back through tourism, merchandise and broadcasting rights.  The Local’s liveblog mentioned that each $1 spent generated $100 profit.

Well, it seems there is an anti-royalty feeling among the swedes, but most of them don’t really care; I read somewhere that they seem to be just used to it, like you’re used to having a dear old sofa in your living room.

It was cool to watch it anyways; I was a bit curious about all of it, after having read news all around the internet. I was watching Australia x Ghana on TV, and taking a look here and there on the stream. The beautiful Stockholm scenary made it worth it, what a beautiful city!

(also, I got to understand 4 or 5 silly phrases in swedish, heh!)

PS: The royal families from pretty much everywhere were invited; some people were complaining because England only sent prince Edward to the ceremony, while William and Harry are in S.Africa for the World Cup. Who the hell marries during a World Cup anyways? ;D

PS2: I thought this was gonna be a short post. Sorry. :x

A place to stay (The world is so small) June 17, 2010

After tons of e-mails, many “no”s, many clicks and many queues, I’ve finally found a place to stay!

I’ve sent an e-mail for a Boplats ad, and finally someone answered in a positive manner. They wanted someone who would move in august, perfect!

It’s a room in a family house – a ocupational therapist, a cruise manager and their 9-years old girl. First I felt unsure – a sensation of being a stranger in someone else’s house – but they were so nice that I’ve decided to stay there.

I asked some people about this, and they told me that this kind of arrangement is usual and a very good option for people in my situation – I’ll have some help when trying to adjust to the new city, and also I won’t be totally alone. I hope they’re as cool in person as they were in the e-mails. :)

Finding an entire apartment for myself after being on the housing queue for a month only is impossible, and their house is in an awesome place, near Chalmers and some other places, really central. They’ve sent me pictures of my room, and it’s a nice place, not too big and not too small, just right. :)

Dr Fries torg

This week there was an article at Boplats talking exactly about the neighbourhood!

Now a break for a small story.

As soon as I got my letter of admission, I’ve started searching for more people that studied or were going to study at Chalmers, and ended up by finding a really helpful guy on Orkut: Douglas. I’ve seen his post on a “Brazilians in Sweden” group, dated from 2 years ago, when he was in the exact same situation as I am, full of doubts; now he’s finishing his masters (by the way, he’s also an architect!).

I’ve sent him a message, and he did not only reply, but also introduced me to more contacts and gave me tons of tips! Then one day he told me that he lived in a family house, that it has been an awesome experience, but that unfortunately his room had been taken already. So I continued searching…

Ah, Douglas also has a blog, Norteando. There I’ve found a gallery with pics from his trip: Does it look familiar?

Douglas told me about his hosts; I asked my host if she knew them, and she told be they’re her friends!

The world is sooo small. :)

I just came back from the innauguration of my 1st solo project: A toy store, Kirus, the most colorful box in the neighborhood.

Kirus

I wish I knew how to take good pics...:~

Seeing a project in which I worked come to life always causes a weird sensation, but this time I felt it harder than before. There’s always that small detail that makes you look and think “oh, that could have been better”, or that thing that didn’t end up looking like what you imagined, and stuff that looks better than you could wish for. Solutions that the client thought by himself, but that you never thought of when designing, and also that stuff that you planned, but wasn’t done for one reason or other.

Interior

Everyone loved the colorful squares on the ceiling. <3

Then you stop and look, and that thing that once was only a small pencil sketch is now there, being part of the landscape of the city. It’s so exciting! After hits and misses and obstacles, my “child” was born and the client loved it. It was a cool project to work on – who wouldn’t love to go crazy with colours and kiddie stuff? I’ve got many cheers, and it made me  feel happy. :)

Going back home, I was thinking about how life changes its course. Since I’ve started working on this, I’ve been introduced to many people, all potential clients. For a second, it seemed my career was gonna take off, and I’d be able to start walking on my own shoes soon.

Then boom, I get a letter of admission and suddenly I’m moving to the other side of the world. Am I crazy? How is it gonna be there? When I come back, how is it gonna be? Wait, what if an opportunity appears and I don’t come back? Was this my first and last project here? Will I have space there? I have no idea!

I’m kinda scared. In fact, I’m totally scared.

Besides the visa and the plane travel, another thing that is making me worried is finding a place to live.

Since before I sent my application, I heard that the housing situation in the swedish biggest cities is chaotic. I didn’t give it much attention, nor worried about it – didn’t want to delude myself, after all I didn’t even knew if I’d have money to go if I passed! But well, I should have worried before – and if you’re thinking about studying in Sweden, I’d advise you to do the same ASAP.

Getting a place to stay in the biggest cities – like Stockholm and Gothenburg – or in the student cities – like Lund – is very complicated. There are literally thousands of people fighting for a chance of VIEWING an apartment – yes, that’s right, there are applications even for the right of viewing an apartment before deciding if you want it or not.

The natural route for a foreigner looking for a home before arriving in the country is finding the housing sites or ad sites. In the end of this post I’ll list everything I’ve found.

To sum it up:

Apartamentos Disponíveis

List of avaliable apartments at Boplats. The darked yellow ones were suggested for me. Look at the "Reg. Count" column. This is the amount of people that are trying to get the same apartment I want. Awesome isn't it?

This is just to illustrate how surreal is the housing problem. To actually have a chance, you need to be registered in the site for months; people who are in the queue for the longest periods have priority for renting.

Another option is to rent a room in someone else’s house, or finding students who are sharing their apartment. The bad side of this is that the rent is not much cheaper than some of those apartments, and well, you’re in someone else’s house. And of course, don’t think it will be easy to find those, there’s also a lot of competition for those! I’ve got many “no”s already, and some “try again later”s. Not to talk about the obvious scams!

But well, it’s only june.  I think more apartments will show up around july/august, when people are moving out. In the worst scenario, I’ll just stay in the hostel were I’ve been in my last vacation, and hope to find a place quickly. On August 25th Boplats is gonna offer some places to students, something interesting may show up. And of course, I’ll meet the other students and maybe we can end up sharing a bigger place.

I kinda regret not having applied to Uppsala now…the cost of living there is smaller, and it’s easier to find a place there. :/

As promised, there’s the list of sites:

Blocket: A site with ads where you can find pretty much everything – bicycles, cars, houses, boyfriends, jobs, books. There you can find ads for the entire country, to rent or sublet, and you can also publish an ad, saying that you need a place. Be careful with scams!

Studentlya: The legend say that they offer apartments and rooms, but until now I’ve only found rooms there. It’s not very organized, and there are tons of outdated ads. But well, maybe you can find something there! You can also post an ad, looking for roomies.

The next links are valid for Gothenburg only:

The universities recommend that you try your luck on student housing sites. Chalmers points you to two options: SGS and Chalmers Studentbostader.

SGS: Register and join their queue ASAP. They require some documents, and you probably won’t have your resident permit yet, but it’s no problem: Just e-mail them and explain your case, they’ll register you (your queue time will start counting), but you’ll only be able to apply for the apartments there after sending all the required documents. Some people register there while they’re still on high school, so you get the idea.

But don’t be discouraged! SGS also offers some apartments on the Sista Minuten system. What does that mean? They put some apartments on their site depending on their avaliability, and the first one to click on them wins the place. You have 2 minutes to fill the application form or it goes to the next candidate, so have your documents always around. Talk about adrenalin!

Chalmers Studentbostader: The Chalmers residences are near the campi. If you’re and Erasmus Mundus student, relax: Chalmers guarantee you a place. If you aren’t, the site has an area for the international students. With your letter of acceptance, you’ll receive a PDF from CSB with a password to access that area. There they offer some apartments from time to time, in a Sista Minuten fashion.  They are really hard to get and you gotta be fast, but I know some people that did it. Good luck!

Boplats: Welcome to hell, this is where I’ve been spending most of my time. Pretty much all the avaliable apartments in the city are offered here, so choose one and wait…forever. Register ASAP! It seems you won’t be able to get one with less than 6 months on the queue, and I’m being pretty optimistic here. They also offer rooms from the Chalmers buildings here, but you also have to be in the queue.

When registering, the site will ask which are your preferred areas. If you’re a student, you’ll probably want to choose Centrum and Väster. You can also be even more specific, but don’t be too exact, or you won’t get many recommendations; if you try to get an apartment that wasn’t reccomendated for you, your choices are near zero. Filling your registration properly is very important; Boplats says that your registration time and the compatibility between your needs and the offered apartments will raise your choices.

Boplats also has a subletting area, with many rooms in other persons’ houses. Again, be careful: there are many scam ads. Never pay anything in advance and report suspicious ads so they can review them.

I hope this helps. If someone wants to share more advices or wants to correct some information, feel free to comment! Lycka till!
